Unzipped

One of the two Zipcar locations in East Boston is looking for a new home. The car-sharing company won't be able to use the spots at Maverick Square and Henry Street after the end of this month, and Zipcar is looking for another suitable location that can fit two or three vehicles. If you have such a spot or know of one you can email jcrooks@zipcar.com.

The second Eastie site, at the Gumball Factory condos on Orleans Street, is still in use.

How much does zipcar pay to rent spots?

Its the Gumball Factory Condos, not apartments.

Thanks for posting that, I got an email about it this morning. Any idea why they can't use that lot anymore? Is there a building going in there, perhaps?

I love zipcar in EB, having lost my car to an unfortunate incident in Southie earlier this year and deciding not to replace it. After taxes, fees, insurance and gas, it's quite a bit cheaper to get a zipcar for a day than a comparable car at the airport rental lots. Hope they can find a new place near Maverick.

I heard a "rumor" that Lamattina's office was trying for a Panera Bread or Starbucks in Maverick Sq. I wonder if this is the beginning of those plans coming to fruition.

I heard there is a self-storage facility going there...anyone got any info on this?

I think it'll be one of those “multi-service” shops that combine a taqueria, cell phone store, pawn shop, money remittance center, tax prep, and travel agency under one roof. Look out Wal-Mart.

I think it's going to be a Travaglini commemorative jacket factory. The guys that run Sterlingwear (they make peacoats for the Navy) have bought it and think the Trav jackets will sell like hotcakes.

Trav coats? Lets face it, the people want Ed Deveau coats. I know I want one.

I heard that they were going to make it a Jimbo Blog store! Wouldn't that be great coffee mugs, shirts, umbrellas ect......

East Boston Neighborhood Health Center acquired the land and is proposing a mixed use building remeniscent of the old Maverick House that once stood at the site - I might add that I think it will be a far better use than the photo shop and a parking lot that currently sits there - not to mention an economic spark that the square so desperately needs! Looking forward to it.

AH – thanks for the info. I agree that the small “immigration photos” building and its large empty lot are not the best use for that prominent site. Do you know if EBNHC intends to have the apartments set aside as income or age restricted housing? I definitely think Maverick Square could use some more housing to keep the area lively and safe, but hope we don’t end up with more public housing projects. It would be nice if the developer also made an effort to accommodate a Zip car spot – it’s a great program.
