Gated community

In less than a month access to Logan Airport's "back door" will be restricted to East Boston residents who have electronic key cards. An automated gate is being installed at the end of Maverick Street, and it's scheduled to be up and running on April 15.

To get a key card, local residents can request a form by calling 617-568-3718 or the form can be printed out from here. The vehicle's registration and a utility bill of some sort are needed to prove residency.

It makes sense to restrict access to that entry point, but it seems to me that -- instead of another application and key card -- there must be a way to use the Mass. Turnpike's Fast Lane transponder to gain entry. Eastie residents already have a different transponder from everone else because of the reduced tunnel toll. Why can't it be reconfigured to open the gate?

Update: The Globe reports that some Eastie residents feel that the gate is a waste of time.

Great point. I completley agree.

I absolutely agree, bcause of this now we get to send our personal information to three seperate agencies for the privledge of using a car in our neighborhood: City Hall for the parking permit, Mass Turnpike Authority for the toll, and now Massport for this gate. Ahh, beurocracy!

stop complaining for once and be happy that they are doing something about it! Is complaining the main theme on this blog?

Good point. And then there's a fourth as well -- the state Registry of Motor Vehicles.

And I don't understand why each of the other three don't simply accept a car's registration as proof of residency. Sure, there are people who lie about that, but insurance fraud is a more serious action than lying to get a parking sticker.

Hey, you're complaining about us complaining.

Spot On Jimbo!

Well stop complaining all the time on how things work. The people who complain the most are the ones who have no solutions Jimbo!

I understand why access is being restricted to residents. However, I do find it annoying in that it is hard enough to tell visitors how to get to Eastie and now there will be one less option. It has been nice to have my guests avoid the traffic congestion in the main 93 tunnel and just sail through the Williams to use this entry point.

I need to get sometrhing off my chest. Last week the East Boston demovratic Ward Committee voted on their elected officers. The neww chairman of the ward committee is Ed Deveau. This is a slap in the face to the people of East Boston. The reason it is a slap is because anyone who has tried to call Ed on the phone knows it can take at least six to seven months to get a call back. Further more, when you do get intouch with him he most likely will not do anything for you.

I can't speak directly to your complaint, but I know Ed and he is a good guy. Once upon a time he was a student in one of my English classes at Savio High School and even then he chided me for my ultra-liberal opinions.

Anon @ 2:49 - You sound like someone who either did not get the Ward Committee Chairmanship or someone who was supporting the "other guy"...otherwise I can't see how it would be a slap in the face to really anybody else (but that person). Face it - nobody really cares about such insignificant things except people on the Ward Committee - so I wonder who else was in the running? I will call Eddie and be back to everyone - and trust me he does not take too much time to get back to me - I can assure you of that!

I agree with Tara, although I don't really understand why this exit is being restricted. It's only a "shortcut" to Jeffries Point and Maverick Square, so it's only useful to people (residents and visitors) who have business in the neighborhood anyway. I really don't see large amounts of traffic cruising down Maverick St. I live up on Sumner St. though, so maybe someone who lives on Maverick St. can set me straight. I sure someone will.

Anyway, I'm sure I could have attended some Jeffries Point neighborhood meetings to get some useful information, but it's easier just to complain here.

Ed Deveau was nominated chairman of the democratic committee and chided you Jim for being liberal. What a joke. Figures he didn't even get top five in votes on the committee. Paul Trav all the way. Ed Deveau is all done. Go vote republican.

Returning Calls-Ed Deveau out to lunch

Prediction Ward Chair- Ed Deveau not present. Has Ed ever gone to the Land Use Council?

Jim, how can we as residents find out a breakdown of Ward Committee votes? Shouldn't we as voters pick the chairman? Can you look into this Ed guy. Is he even competent? Someone mentioned the other guy supporters?

Hi All,

I have to disagree with "Anonymous" regarding Ed Deveau. He has always called me back when I've called Senator Petruccelli's office. Why does he have to attend all meetings when other staffers go to them. He's not the only Petruccelli staffer. I think Ed is a class act and very deserving of the Ward nomination & if you have a problem with him you should tell him how you feel rather than write on this and bash his reputation.

I agree. Ed is a very well respected individual. And as with all of Senator Petrucellis' staffers he does a great job no matter what the task.

Ed Deveau is a great person, if you care so much about who was chosen for the ward committee you should get more involved all the members that were chosen have been involved in the the east boston community for a very long time.

Anonymous said...

Also, again the another person that was chose was Michael Sulprizio as Vice Chairman he is another great person. I don't get it they are both very qualified to be members of the ward committee

I think Ed Deveau is a great person for the job, also Mike Sulprizio was chosen as Vice Chairman I couldn't think of 2 better people to run the Ward Committee. There were other people chosen on the committee that have been involved in the ward committee for a long time.
If your an expert on the ward committee why not get involved, you seem to have all the answers.

to bring it back to the "gated community topic"...not only is it more difficult for tara's visitors, but also to those that work in East Boston...who also pay the full toll costs

Anonymous said...

No One in the community even knows what thw ward committee does. Deveau has no experience with the Democratic Party, and to be honest he came in 10th place on the committee. That means the public doesnt want him or know who he is. I suppose he is a nice enough guy but not a leader.

Why was John Bartolo's comment deleted - I thought he was Eddie's friend...did I miss something?

Ms. Truth said...

Anon. Who do you think should have been chosen Chairperson of the ward committee, since you have all the answers, maybe you should run for an elected office??

In response to Anonymous at 10:17: At times people post using someone else's name. This appears to have been the case with those comments.
