Today I crossed paths with a Good Friday procession of perhaps 300 or so marching down Chelsea Street at about 11 a.m. The group had a police escort and was reciting the "Hail Mary."

Hi Jimbo - I believe it was the "Way of the Cross For Life" procession that you witnessed. It is a procession that has been held on Good Friday for the last several years in East Boston and other parts of the city that replicates the stations of the cross.
Historically, this procession would start at the Assumption church at Jeffries Point and stop to reflect on a station at each church along the way with the procession culminating at the Don Orione Shrine at the Heights.
As an aside, any organization can hire a police detail by going to Station 7 and completing the appropriate paperwork.
