Local art on display

A new exhibit entitled "Off the Wall" just opened at the Atlantic Works gallery on Border Street. "In this exhibition, the artists playfully respond to contemporary constructs and conventions at the social, political, and economic levels," says the gallery's web site.

If you haven't already visited the shows and the studios at Atlantic Works please do. Shortly after moving to East Boston I wandered in for a show and was very impressed. Since then I have been to see several exhibits and have to say we have dome real talent here in East Boston. I hope to have one of the Artscope writers over soon for a visit.

Having nicer and interesting places to go and things to do in the neighborhood can only help to motivate our neighbors to take better care. Successsful businesses and active organizations like East Boston Artists Group get's the local pols attention and helps build a sense of community. It's interesting to me that there are so many of our neighbors opposed to nicer restaurants, upscale businesses or the aesthetic improvement of areas like Maverick.

Again Vonwotan, who cares about art when we have filthy streets and gangs

I care about art. It is quite possibly the thing that separates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom, but beyond that it unites us and expresses universal ideas and emotions -- sometimes letting us know that others feel the same way we do.

Art changes the world.

Many people care about art in all walks of life. Encouraging groups like EBAG, Zumix, the new arts center all can cotribute to safer and cleaner street as can any community building projects. In NYC, art programs helped get some of those potential and former gang members and "taggers" off the streets and dong something productive. Community art projects, gardens, etc. got neighbors involved and the surrounding areas were cleaner and safer because people cared that much more for their neigborhoods. People need to care about their surroundings in order to keep them clean and there are many ways to encourage this, as does encouraging their talents and giving them a vested interest in the community.

Make suggestions, give constructive direction, participate in the neighborhoos meetings with the Boston Police and local councilmen and let them know how you envision us bettering our neighborhood.

There is no reason to dismiss or belittle anyone's interests or livelihood.

speaking of clean streets and safety - people that are interested in art are usually educated and aware. these people also care about safety and litter -let's continue to attract and welcome these kinds of people and art. dont' be ignorant, well at least try not to be...

The Atlantic works art gallery is terrific. They held a great open house this past weekend. Having outlets such as this will help to continue to improve our city. We should all care about the art work and the art programs as well as programs like Zumix. They have gone a long way to helping the Eastie youth steer clear of the streets. I'm all for clean and safe streets but am also thankful East Boston has such beneficial programs!
