Stepping out for a good cause

Right about now people are checking in for the Relay for Life at East Boston Stadium and they will be on hand for the next 24 hours, rain or -- well, looks like there is no other option. More than $20,000 has been raised so far for the American Cancer Society by the 23 teams who are taking part. You can add to that total by going to the Eastie Relay for Life web site.

Yeah, I was part of the walk and a couple of people that were part of the organizing meetings said the only people to complain about the event before it even took place were the newbies over at Porter 156(Yup, that's where Michele McPhee and Andrew Kenneally live). They warned organizers that they didn't want the music to be too loud. Nice newcomers supporting community events huh?

Other than that it was one of the best events in Eastie!
Good job to all the organizers and walkers.

8:54, I don't think you should make such a generalization about McPhee & Kenneally just because they happen to live next to the event. We all deserve a good night's sleep and the right to quiet enjoyment. If there was going to be music playing near my house you bet I'd let the organizers know that they need to be respectful of the neighbors. Nobody seemed to complain about the newbies when the "old-timers" were all selling their three deckers for $500k two years ago.

From the moment we heard about the Relay For Life - Team Sacred Heart Festival was thrilled to participate. The goal of this event aligned so perfectly with our mission to continue to enhance the lives of folks within the East Boston Community - particularly children and families. What better way to work toward this goal than to participate in such a wonderful community-building fundraising event?

We had a wonderful time and applaude the planning committee made up of members of the East Boston Community and folks from the American Cancer Society. Peggy Margardo, Kristina Pizzicanella, Tiffany LaCascia, Diana Petrucelli, JoAnn LaFontaine, Eric Langhoff and so many others were so amazing - along with DJ's Damien Margardo and Glenn Raddy who kept us going throughout the night.

Although the thought of walking all night long seemed daunting at the start - the time flew and so many facets of the event were inspiring - particularly opening ceremonies that included survivor stories and lap, in addition to the 11PM luminaria ceremony where hundreds of personalized bags honoring those who have battled, are battling, have beaten and have succumbed to cancer were illuminated for the purpose of guiding our way throughout the night.

We are all looking forward to next year and are grateful to the American Cancer Society for bringing this event to East Boston!

Thanks Bill! Really I had an awesome team including my amazing daughter Allison, my unbelievably superhuman co-captain Crystal Basile, the incomparable Nancy LoConte the fantastic Mimi DiFeo and her daughter Alicia along with some fabulous friends. We put on some serious mileage and had a great time raising money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

We are really in a flurry of activity this week preparing for the festival and look forward to seeing you and everyone there!

I really appreciate that. I thought long and hard about it.I only have six years to go until I can retire, and would have had to give up my job if I had won.I was really encouraged by the response,it would have been a good race. Thanks again.
