A chance to speak up

The City of Boston Licensing Board has scheduled a hearing to discuss problems with Tequila's Mexican Bar & Grill, which a number of people have written negative comments about in recent months on this blog. Located at 964 Bennington Street -- at the site of what used to be the Kailua Hawaiian Restaurant -- Tequila's seems to be a late-night trouble spot. One web site also notes that the food and service are pretty bad as well.

The hearing will be held on Nov. 15 at 6:15 p.m. at the St. Lazarus Church hall on Ashley Street. On the agenda will be proposals to roll back Tequila's closing time to midnight rather than 2 a.m., to confine the service of alcohol to those customers who are dining, and to suspend the restaurant's liquor license for a period of time.

Also of interest, the Cosmopolitan Lounge in Day Square -- formerly Logan's Lounge -- is applying to extend its license to include live entertainment seven nights a week. The city's Zoning Board of Appeals will hear the request at City Hall on Nov. 13 at 11:30 a.m.

Finally, word is that Cafe 303 on Sumner Street is applying for a liquor license.

Tequila's really needs to be shut down. It's a haven for the worst East Boston has to offer. I went there once with friends to try the food. It was downright awful. It took us over an hour to get our food, and we had to go up to the bar to ask for more drinks.

As far as the 303 goes...I REALLY hope they get a liquor license. It would be great to have a classy place to stop for a glass of wine, beer or cocktail. This is the kind of place that WILL NOT cause a spectacle in the neighbohood. More of East Boston's liquor licenses need to be given to places like this and not places like Tequila's...also I heard Cafe Tavern Eclipse has closed, that's another one that needed to be cleaned off of the landscape!

East Boston Rules
Says to the Orient Heights area around Tequilas.

Mark your Calender for this one,or call a relative,or friend who may live in this area.

November 15th,2007 at St.Lazarus Church hall aka Father Thoma Hall
6 :15 p.m.
The entire City of Bostons Licensing Board acting on a petition of over 500 people will hold an open public HEARING to Roll Back the hours from 2 a.m. to 12 midnight.
This means kitchen closed no later than 11 p.m.,and EVERYONE out doors locked at 12 midnight.

Also to make it service of Alcohol with food omly, and finally for thier massive amounts of violations,a 30-60 day suspension of thier license.

Bringing it back to a real Family Restaurant.

Quick follow up on Tequilas .

MLS Real estate listing number 70671115 shows Mr. Vasco trying
"IN A BIG HURRY " to sell the Liquor License ,and the restaurant for 350,000.00 dollars.

He knows if its rolled back to 12 midnight its worth about 1/5 TH of that ,if even that.

This is not for the building because he does not own it,and knows his lease because of his being such a huge problem is not being renewed.

The owner was at the last Licensing Board hearing, and was in tears as she ,and her family listened to the laundry list of violations, and has promised this community to make things right.

She was visibly shaken sitting next to me in the front row,and in shock.

Hi Jimbo,

Just a quick review. I just went to 303 today for lunch and I was very impressed. The food, service and coffee were great. Apparently they are having a meeting with the Jeffries point neighborhood assoc. on November 13th 7pm at the yacht club to talk about their liquor license application. My opinion, this is exactly the kind of establishment that should deserve a liquor license.

Great blog btw,
Chris

Hi Jimbo
I went to Dunkin Donuts in Orient Heights today, and had some good food. The service was great, and the place was so clean. Now thats a place we need a Liquor License for sure.

Last night I went to McDonalds ,and had a Happy Meal ,and it was awesome. The place was so nice, and the service was so good that I sat ,and said wow a good drink would make this Happy Meal ,much more Happy!

I could go on but I think you get the picture folks!!!!

Sigh.

What's the big deal with the liquor licenses? I don't get it. 303 should have at least beer and wine.

And I will never understand why I can't buy wine at a grocery store and have to run to a seedy, smelly, gross liquor store is something else I will never understand about America.

Oh wait. I can get wine at Trader Joe's in Cambridge...now, if I only had a car....

I support 303's application for a liquor license. If I can get a glass of wine at Caffe Italia, Taqueria Cancun, Kelly's, or Santarpio's, I see no reason why I can't get a glass of wine with my dinner at 303. The owner's are neighborhood people who have so far acted responsibly in their operations.

Tequila's inability to serve alcohol responsibly is irrelevant in the matter of 303's liquor license application. They are not the same owners. They aren't even the same type of establishment. Tequila's is apparently partly a bar. 303 is clearly a food serving establishment. Unless someone can show that they do not have the ability to serve responsibly, I support their application.

Hey Jimbo

I think after reading her last post ,that it is very sad that people post on here ,and have no clue about what they are talking about.

Both locations have had thier licenses for over 10 years ,and surprise, surprise I have talked about one of them on various sections of your blog.

Including the exact address,on more than one occassion.

Now one more point about the use of the words,
"classy",Respectable","Fine Dining"etc.

In the past 4 years alone those were words used to CON this community to support the Granting of Beer, and Wine licenses. Only to find out it was strickly to increase the resale value of the property.

A FACT:
One located in Day Square got the License, saying and I quote from the minutes of the meeting"Its been my families dream to open a nice sit down restaurant, and the Beer ,and Wine is a vital part of it being a success".

So the L.U.C.,the City supported it,and it was approved.

Exactly 45 days after he got the license the place was shut down, and sold for about 3 times what he paid for it.

So it is true "There is a Sucker born everyday".

Not against alcohol, just against Outsiders who do nothing but Laugh at us all the way to the bank.

Then drive home to DRY TOWNS ,and never have any of the sleepless nights like the people living in the area of Tequilas.

Nuff Siad !

Santarpio's could hardly be described as classy, fine dining. Good pizza, no doubt, but not fine dining by any stretch of the imagination. However, they serve beer and wine and seem to be able to do so responsibly. And I've been told that the owner's of Santarpio's do not live in East Boston, at least not any more.

There may be good reasons for opposing a liquor license application on a case by case basis. In the case of 303 I see no reason to oppose it. The owner's live here. They run a family friendly, eco-sensitive restaurant that is a benefit to this neighborhood. As a resident, I am happy to join many of my neighbors in support of 303's application. I did not attend the meeting but I was told that Mel and Tom have received wide support at the Jeffries Point Neighborhood Association meeting last night and I believe that support is well deserved.
