"Oh My Golly!"

It was 20 years ago today that one of the coolest and most influential albums in modern rock music was first released. Founded by a couple of UMass/Amherst dropouts, the Pixies coalesced in Boston in 1985. Two years later they released an EP titled Come On Pilgrim, and then in March 1988 a collection of 13 songs was released on an album called Surfer Rosa. The lo-fi sound and the offbeat subject matter would influence many bands in the future, including Nirvana. Rock 'n' roll has rarely been this cool.

The Pixies were the most under rated band in the pre-grunge era. Listen to any Pixies album and stack it against Nirvana and you will quickly realize Cobain was nothing more than a Frank Black wanna be. Soft verse--hard chorus was invented by Black and Cobain basically expanded on it.
As an Amherst Alum, they were always one of my favorite bands--It's Educational!

I was a freshman in college when I discovered the Pixies (Here Comes You Man - Monkey Gone To Heaven) on 101.7 WFNX - I still listen to them on my Napster playlist! They rock!
