Syrup prices jump

I've seen a number of stories lately about the rising cost of various foods because (a) the price of gasoline has skyrocketed, and (b) the opening of markets and increased demand in places like China and India. Today the Globe notes that maple syrup is cracking the $50 a gallon mark. That's more than ten times the price of a gallon of regular unleaded at your local filling station!

Pure maple syrup is wonderful stuff. It was first produced by Native Americans, who then taught early European settlers how to make the sweet, smoky, golden-brown goodness from the sap of maple trees. Soon it may be too expensive for the average Joe to buy. O, the tragedy of it all!

I can't believe this. The Ed stuff is giving me anxiety. Jim for the love of God and all the angels in heaven start a ward committee topic. Please I know the eastbostonian would listen to the cry of the people.

Must everything always be about business? Sometimes its good to reflect upon a small concern that inconviences a bit of joy for someone. Grow some hearts people.

Nice job Jimbo, if syrup makes you happy then more power to you.

I wonder if it is strictly the price of gas that is causing the jump in maple syrup prices. My husband knows someone with a maple tree farm in New Brunswick, Canada and he mentioned that there was still 5 feet of snow on the ground up there. That's probably an exaggeration but it appears that they can't get to the trees. Maybe there is simply a shortage.

Three years ago my cousin was in a bad car accident and she lost her ability to see and walk. Our family was devestated. She had many surgeries on her eyes and and back, all with the same result, blindness and paralysis. Just recently, we had heard there was a world class surgeon at Mass General who specialized in spinal chord surgery. We knew we would need some kind of connection to get her in to see this guy so we solicited the help of our state senators office. I called and spoke to a man named Ed Deveau. I told him the story and he said he would like to my cousin. I did not know why he wanted to see her but I figured their was nothing to lose, so that weekend we headed to the nursing home where she was cared for.
We walked in the door and Ed walked up to my cousin and placed his hands on her head and said," you can see and walk now". And with that she rose up from her wheelchair and began to walk across the room. She screamed at the top of her lungs,"God bless you Ed, I can see!" I could not believe my eyes, I had just witnessed a miracle. My cousin and I looked at each other and embraced in a long hug. Unbenounced to the both of us, Ed had slipped out the door and was gone.
On that day I learned that there are angels that walk among us. Ed is truly a king amongst men.
