Word war I

Hey, the mayoral election is sneaking up on us. Tonight is the first of three debates -- two before the Sept. 22 preliminary election and one after. The four candidates square off at 7 p.m. this evening on WBZ-TV (Channel 4).

Tom Menino, Boston's longest-serving mayor, is being challenged by City Councilors Michael Flaherty and Sam Yoon, and businessman Kevin McCrea. The second debate will be held on Sept. 10 from 5 to 6 p.m. on WFXT (Ch. 25) and the third on Oct. 19 from 7 to 8 p.m. on WGBH (Ch.2). The general election is on Nov. 3.

Leave a comment after the debate and let us know what you thought.

I didn't care for the format. I think the first part made it look like the other candidates were ganging up on the mayor. It felt a little bit disorganized.

Otherwise, I learned more about McCrea than the other candidates. For the most part, I thought he had some interesting things to say, but I didn't like how he interrupted the mayor in the last bit of rebuttal. I've always felt like that level of disrespect is the refuge of people who did not have a good enough argument or evidence.

I posted my comment to the wrong blog post. Here it is again...

I thought the four candidates all did well though I wasn't impressed by any of them. I thought Flaherty came across as a bit smug and really looked foolish defending the city council for acting in their own best interest against McCrea. Yoon seemed to be so focused on getting his points out that he was almost robotic. I'm not looking for a mayor who is a robot. McCrea probably made the most sense out of all of them and I honestly feel he would probably change Boston for the better than any of them. However, in the end, the best candidate who actually has a chance was the Mayor. He knows the city, we know he cares, and he has no desire to do anything other than make Boston the best it can be. I wish he'd clean up the insider deals that go on but I really don't see another candidate with a chance that can do a better job. So for now, my vote goes to Tommy - unless of course a Republican runs.

Only if ted kennedys grandson could debate head on againts mumbles, mccrea impressed me with his bashionizing mumbles and the city council, great scare tactics thats what voters of boston should hear about from mccrea, the truth about mumbles- They talked about money wasting police" robert capucci $175.000.00 a year" details, So thats where the average lifelong boston 78 year old working grandmothers who pay hefty real estate taxes so they can keep there lifelong homes go to!!!!

Menino didnt stumble or make a major error. That was about all he had to do.But actually The Mayor handled himself well. Flaherty was overly cautious and he needed a knockout to generate interest in a race thats become quite boring. Yoon and McCrea were both articulate presenting themselves as agents of change.Nothing exciting happened to get people talking about the race so the edge goes to Menino.

Uhm... not so sure on those last two posts, but maybe the Mayor should have a coming out moment -- a heart-to-heart interview with Nathalie Jacobson about his living with a severe speech impediment all his life. It would make all the "Mumbles" jokes look mean-spirited (like calling Ted Jr. 'gimpy' or something like that), garner him some sympathy and explain why he doesn't debate well. And let's face it, if you don't call that a speech impediment, I don't what it is.

And yes, thank god all Republican politicians are nothing like Democratic politicians. As my grampy used to say, "they're a bunch of shysters, all of 'em."

Looks like one of the charges made by McCrea at last night's debate isn't entirely true.

The debate was a joke !
Keller lost control within minutes.

The format was also terrible.

How dumb / smart were they allowing cross talk. Politicians do not know the words yes,or no.

When asked for a simple yes or no on charter schools cap, they each wasted about 3-5minutes talking sht.
