It seems to me that Flaherty looked more composed and he seemed to score some points on the mayor. I don't think he did enough to turn the race around with two weeks to go, but beating an incumbent with a machine is always close to impossible.

I'm supporting the mayor. However, I felt that Flahery exhibited that he had a strong command of the issues facing the City. I did however keep having flashbacks to the Kerry debates when he would come on stage looking orange - why would Flaherty dye his hair on debate night? Anyway, Flaherty stuck to his talking points and did a great job. I'm convinced that the time is right for a change, just not a change to Flaherty.

Jim, you nwork for Sal LaMattina. I remember when you were begging for a job from him, back when you were a lowly paid savio teacher. Have the respect to support the Mayor like Sal is. Otherwise get a new job. Unbelievable how short your memory is.

2 out of 3 known Globe columnists (Domke and Lehigh) gave the debate to Flaherty. If I was Menino I'd hope many undecideds weren't reading the paper today.

I felt that Flaherty clearly won the debate, and the last one as well. However the ratings were low because the race never caught fire with the voters.9:48 brought out an interesting point about Flaherty's hair. I always thought that he starting dying it gray a decade ago.

The comment at 8:37 makes little sense. I didn't beg anyone for a job; instead, I was contacted by the Councilor. Further, it's not my primary source of income.

Next, the Councilor has never asked me to support a particular candidate in any race. Whatever job I have or will have, I'd never let that influence who I support or who I vote for.

By the logic of 8:37 any city employee must show respect to the mayor by voting for him. There aren't enough city hall/Menino loyalists to hit every polling location to make sure that all city hall employees vote for the mayor. You can't hold the pen for everyone guys. We can fill in the circles for ourselves.

Is the rumor true Sal let someone go in his office who was supporting Carlo and not Jeff? Wanting blind loyalty and obedience is a sickness with some of these people.

What does Jim's working for Sal have to do with last night's debate? Honestly, these threads go off on the strangest tangents.

Anon @ 8:52 am: So you think Domke giving the debate to Flaherty is good news for Flaherty? The bad new is that he did so in the Boston Globe of all newspapers! If you knew anything, then you would understand why. Domke is a Republican expressing his opinion in a newspaper read mostly by...Democrats who live in a City that is made up of Democrats or Democratic leaning unenrolled voters. By grading Flaherty with such high marks and giving such poor marks to Menino - the article probably does more to strengthen progressive and liberal voters in the City(including Yoon supporters) for Menino - not Flaherty. And Scott Lehigh? No surprise there. Is he really that different than Domke?

Gee some of us thought this was a non partisan election.

just because there is no democratic and republican primaries, don't fool yourself into believing that there is not partisan politics in city elections. Flaherty is viewed as a conservative and part of the old South Boston guard where Menino is viewed as more of a progressive liberal. Just look at the preliminary results and see where they were strongest and you will have your answer smart guy!

Sal contacted you? I don't think so. You needed the money and were crying.
